Death of Anedjib (Merib / Enzib) — Accession of Semerkhet
It is now possible to fix Old, Middle and New Kingdom chronology of Egypt in absolute time. The link to place the Old Kingdom comes from the records of flooding of the Nile river contained in the four fragments of The Palermo Stones: Shäfer (1902) and Breasted (1906); The London fragment: Petrie (1916); and the Cenival fragment (1965) — most particularly the Palermo Stone. This overall record was reconstructed by Weigal in 1929 from the two main fragments, and has been of major use in the development of chronology.
Quinn (1992) showed conclusively that Nile river floods from 622 AD to 1990 were very closely correlated to the ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) events. When an El Niño event occurs there is a deficiency in rainfall in North-East Africa, and the Nile showed a lower than normal flood — a biblical drought season. The La Niña event carries excess water to NE Africa, producing an unusually high flood. Dendrochronology has also been linked to ENSO events, and thus to Nile river flood seasons.
Tree ring data from the ITRDB (International Tree Ring Data Base) — particularly Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva) from Methuselah Walk (to 6000 BC) and White Mountain Master (to 5140 BC) — were compared to the Palermo fragments after conversion to meters using 0.543 meters per cubit. When plotted, a 'fingerprint' at about 3080 BC matched one and only one alignment of Nile floods to the dendrochronology. The estimated chronology had to be slipped a gratifyingly small 8 years to achieve a perfect fit.
There is one Egyptian Civil Calendar date given for the start of the reign of Semerkhet, allowing us to fix the death of Anedjib (Merib, Enzib) and the start of the reign of Semerkhet as 15 February 3080 BC. The Palermo data also allow us to lock in Year 1 of Zoser as 2751 BC, though without an exact calendar date.

The Old Kingdom Anchor
The death of Anedjib (Merib/Enzib) and accession of Semerkhet is fixed at 15 February 3080 BC — an exact Julian date derived from the convergence of Palermo Stone flood records and Bristlecone Pine dendrochronology. Year 1 of Zoser is fixed at 2751 BC. The first through sixth dynasties span 955 years per the Turin fragments, constraining the full sequence with diminishing error toward the middle dates.

The Middle Kingdom Anchor
Year 7 of Senworset III is fixed at 1872 BC by combined sothic and lunar dates that admit no other interpretation. This yields a second precise date — coincidentally also 15 February — in 1962 BC for the death of Amenemhet I after 10 years of co-regency with Senworset I. The known total of 213 years, 1 month, and 17 days for the 11th and 12th dynasties fixes the relative beginning and ending dates, keeping probable errors within about 2 years for intermediate reigns.

The rising of Sirius (Sothis) on the 9th day of the 3rd month, 3rd season of Year 9 of Thutmose I, combined with lunar observations, uniquely fixes that reign. The 54 Ramses II eclipse data allows only start dates of 1304, 1292, 1279 BC et al. — but only 1304 BC can be reconciled with the Thutmose I dates and the fact that the sothic cycle ending 139 AD was also complete in 1368 BC, which must fall within the extended reign of Horemheb (likely under Akhenaten, near his heresy and move to his new capital). Thus 1304 BC is the only date consistent with all the data.
Dendrochronology and the Nile
The key methodological breakthrough was linking Nile flood records to El Niño / La Niña (ENSO) cycles via tree ring data. German oak tree ring data (Spessart and Trier forests, 820 AD–1977) and Java data (1500–1940) both showed conclusive matches of dendrochronology to ENSO events. This multi-source convergence — Palermo Stone flood heights, Bristlecone Pine rings, and ENSO correlation — produces a chronological fingerprint precise enough to fix dates to the exact day.
